A Gift to u/ 01:16
You've heard me in passing in-between those Christmas songs. Am I silly or serious? Not quite clear, yes... But I hope that I belong, too. An anonymous Christmas gift to u/. How is your family? That's all I need this year until the end of time. Maybe the world's in shambles, Erase it all, Let it fall away. We'll build a diff'rent kind of day. I wish you hope. I wish you love. I wish you ev'ry happiness. I know we're lost. I know it's rough. I know, I sound like the epitome of sappiness. (I know I don't know you. Ha.) You can't get rid o' me. What you've lost is what you gain. See, I may not know you, but the fact remains He loves You.

How... did I make this song? ... The "How?"... starts... with a "Why?" ... And that "Why?" is also precluded... with a... "Who?" and "Where?" I was on... the Internet, and, I talked with a stranger who happened to share a similar interest: The Free Design, one of my absolute favourite bands of all-time. Besides having The Free Design in common, we also shared a love of odd Christmas music. She had, in-fact, made Christmas mixtapes every single year since 2000, at least. That instantly inspired me, a-and I asked to be on the mailing list for this year's mixtape. (If you listen closely here and at some other points, there's a slight garble from loose USB connection on my Blue Snowball mic. I was in the car, gripping it really tight so its plastic legs wouldn't wobble.) Sadly though, as Christmas got closer, this person messaged me and said that... there would be no Christmas mixtape this year, because, there was very little cheer on stock to help in putting together this mixtape. And that just wrecked me, to think that this beautiful tradition was--was being broken... by the year. So I felt that I should use whatever cheer *I* have in supply, and donate it to this person, instead. Uh, so I created a... two-hour mixtape, with 42 songs. I called it "The Christmaser's Guide to the Galaxy". As you can imagine, this endeavor only got more and more ambitious and fueled by copious amounts of the Christmas Spirit. It was veritably off-the-heezy! Nearing the end mark, I realized that the last two songs that I picked-- the BEST way to get between them... was to simply write a... transitional song in-between. Uh, which became this! So that's why it's called, "A Gift to u/", with a slash at the end. Guh-uz' it's a gift... to a virtual stranger. S'nce this song IS transitional, the starting point was to simply take the ending chord of the first song that I picked, and the beginning chord of the last song that I picked. Those two songs in question were Surprise Ice, from the... self-titled debut album of Kings of Convenience, something I wasn't even aware existed until now... and a beautiful song by... none other than The Free Design, to bring this full circle! So I don't really *know* chords, but when I play them on Logic, Logic tells me what they are, so I'm just reading them off. So THIS chord from Surprise Ice, or at least the way that I interpret it, is kind of a Bm7/9. And then the chord that I need to GET to, from the song by the Free Design, is kind of a Bb9/#11...? Which is a beautiful basis for a song, but what was interesting was that that FIRST chord, the Bm7/9, that really wanted to resolve into this... kind of Dm7sus2, and then... Gmaj7/9, back and forth. ... For any Free Design fans: (sung) Kites are fun~ (funnnn, da-da'nn-da, radadada~) See my kite, it's fun. (Kites are fun~) Hm-MM-mm-mMM-mm, mm-mm-mm-mm-m... So that's a splendid little musical nod to the inspirations at play here! Nnd'oh, and all those fiddly piano sketches at the beginning? That was me trying to figure out the SONG. I-i-in-fact, I saved the last one of those sketches for right *now*... (over more piano fiddling) ... because, I am about... to... ff-igure out... SOMETHING... inTEGral. OoOOooh, well, that sounds rather nice, BUT, it would eventually become: (*plays the beginning of the song*) Hey, it's the beginning of the song! (very squeakily) HAUH. There's still one last thing that's really important to talk about, because the song doesn't BEGIN with the chord, it begins with a percussion sample. U-uh, I knew from the beginning that I wanted it to start with some... hard-hitting beat, but of course, I didn't know all the SPECIFICS. I wanted the sounds to be interesting... and context-less. So, I actually just looked in my Loop Library and found... that one of the loops... came with a kind of... micro-sampler... KIT. So this was the ORIGINAL beat that... I heard that inspired me: (plays beat) --And while listening to it, I accidentally... held down the sustain pedal, which, SUSTAINED one of the samples, to make, like, a riser sound: (plays altered beat) --and I liked that, so i kept it in, and, I added a lot more rhythmic complexity: (plays altered altered beat) And then I began to craft this bizarre disco beat around this initial germ of an idea... ... only to realize later that this wouldn't serve... the... emotional... rhythm that I was going to need for this? Wwww-AAAnd so, using the very same sounds--CHIPPITYCHOPPITY-- I created a very different... r-r-rhythmic context: (plays altered altered altered beat) (in very brief Mad Hatter voice) Which thank GOODness is what you hear in the final mix. BUT, I-I began to wonder what would have happened if I stuck with my initial... rhythmic concept. And so. Thhh-is is way too fast for the lyrics that I wrote, but, um, s'fun! (revised prototype plays, the rest is improvised musical tidbits) WOO! Scooby-dooby-doo-WOOP-wooh~ Ar-ri-ih-EP-urp... dup--ahfleaMARKet... ahMontGOMery! Ar-ri-ih-EP-urp... dup--ahf--EP--ahf... Laaa-da-da-nn-da, laaa-da-da-nn-da, laaa-da-da-nn-da-dan-da... NahdadENdunnn-nhahdEN den dah~ (Da-dun da-dnn da-dnn da-dnn dun.) Uh-lah rah da~ (L-lah dah dah-nn nuh da-den-dun.) Uh-lah rah da~ (L-lah dah dah-nn nuh da-den-dun.) IT'S NINE IN THE MORNIN'~ ... yehhh~

The whole reason I made this is explained in Track 5, but in short, this is a song to everyone I know and everyone I don't know, in the hopes of making things just a little better. A lil' heart-to-heart. Don't deny it, you KNOW it's what we humans need to survive!
