about

Well, there's lots I could say about the VIDEO-- which is here, by the way:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ROI7gZusy8

And there's also a some lot of things I could say about the OUTTAKES reel, which is also in that word-place after the colon: www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYvT-o2HVyM

As far as the song itself goes, this is one of the hardest things I've ever tried singing, but thankfully, Eileen's fantastic accompaniment and resonant performance helped me to find the inner Patinkin in me. (Eileen, how did you sustain those notes like they were a trifle?! Gee-heez.) 99% of the sound was recorded in the garage to help provide a similar open atmosphere to match the ambience of Eileen's own room. And then, like, one or two other lines were recorded INSIDE the car IN the garage. Because that place 1) ensures not every man and their stranger-danger dog can hear me, and also, 2) has nice vocal isolation. Seriously, try recording in your car. It's free. I can't begin to express how grateful I am to Eileen for allowing me to do this! To think of what would've happened had I not ever made Sondheim videos on my own. I shudder. T'is all worth it for a friendship and collaboration such as this.

lyrics

DOT
Yes, George, run to your work. Hide behind your painting. I have come to tell you I am leaving because I thought you might care to know--foolish of me, because you care about nothing.

GEORGE
I care about many things--

DOT
Things--not people.

GEORGE
People, too.
I cannot divide my feelings as neatly as you and, I am not hiding behind my canvas--I am living in it.

DOT
What you care for is yourself.

GEORGE
I care about this painting. You will be in this painting.

DOT
I am something you can use.

GEORGE
I had thought you understood.

DOT
It's because I understand that I left,
That I am leaving.

GEORGE
Then there's nothing I can say,
Is there?

DOT
Yes, George, there is:
You could tell me not to go.
Say it to me,
Tell me not to go.
Tell me that you're hurt,
Tell me you're relieved,
Tell me that you're bored--
Anything, but don't assume I know.
Tell me what you feel!

GEORGE
What I feel?
You know exactly how I feel.
Why do you insist
You must hear words,
When you know I cannot give you words?
Not the ones you need.

There's nothing to say.

DOT
There are many things.

GEORGE
Well, nothing that's not been said.

DOT
Said by you, though, George?

GEORGE
I needed you and you left.

DOT
There was no room for me--

GEORGE
You will not accept who I am.
I am what I do!
Which you knew,
Which you always knew,
Which I thought you were a part of--!

DOT
No,
You are complete, George,
You are your own.
We do not belong together.
You are complete, George,
You all alone.
I am unfinished,
I am diminished
With or without you.

GEORGE
(over)
I am diminished
With or without you...

GEORGE & DOT
We do not belong together,
And we should belonged together.

DOT
What made it so right together
Is what made it all wrong.

GEORGE
Finishing the hat...

DOT
No one is you, George,
There we agree,
But others will do, George.

GEORGE
And how the kind of woman willing to wait's
Not the kind that you want to find waiting
To return you to the night.

DOT
No one is you, and
No one can be,
But no one is me, George,
No one is me.

GEORGE
Dot--!

DOT & GEORGE
We do not belong together.
And we'll never belong--!

DOT
You have a mission,
A mission to see.
Now I have one too, George.

DOT & GEORGE
And we should have belonged together.

DOT
I have to move on.

GEORGE
Second bottle.
Ah-- she looks for me.

Skye Hawaii

Skye frolics through and delves into in ev'ry metaphorical acre of the expansive, fruitful meadow of the creative arts. He's an amateur author, actor, artist, comedian, composer, film-maker, musician, playwright, singer-songwriter, and just plain ol' writer. He also likes drumming out rhythms on his thighs.

He doesn't really know what he's doing, but, needless to say, he's doing a lot of it.
